In South Korea, beaches with surfable waves are rare. This scarcity has fostered unique local cultures in the few coastal towns where surfing is possible. Yangyang-gun stands as the symbolic birthplace of this culture and remains a vibrant hub for the community today. Waveworks Yangyang was established here as a “workation” center—a space designed for the coexistence of work and vacation. Within its open, multi-purpose interior, individuals work with a sense of freedom that reflects the modern era of the mobile office.

Rewriting Modernism Through Materials

material strategies for updating and repurposing modernist classics 24

Park Hill, a large social housing complex in Sheffield, stands out as one of the most ambitious examples of modernist architecture in post-war Britain. Designed in 1961 by Jack Lynn and Ivor Smith, its innovative concept of “streets in the sky” aimed to combine high-density housing with the community spirit of traditional neighborhoods. By the late 20th century, the complex had fallen into severe neglect, marked by social problems and structural degradation that undermined both its functionality and reputation. Gradually, Park Hill became synonymous with the failure of modernism, carrying a heavy social stigma and marginalizing its residents.

For a young couple with three children, building a cottage on Manitouwaba Lake was about more than a getaway—it was about continuing a family story. The new retreat would sit beside the parents’ legacy cottage in Seguin, and by merging two properties into one, the family created a site large enough to hold both heritage and future.

The site is characterized by rolling hills and mountain landscapes with expansive valley views, typical of the semi-arid Córdoba region. The terrain, with its steep topography, extends across the foothills separating the Punilla Valley from the Sierras Chicas. Perched on an elevated plateau near the access road and at the highest point of the plot, the house is organized over two levels in a linear layout, with a clear orientation toward the northwest.

In a global landscape marked by accelerated change, 2025 emerged as a decisive year for architecture—not only because of the major events that animated the international circuit, but above all because of the voices that stood out within them. From the Venice Architecture Biennale to Expo Osaka, pavilions and installations from the Global South ceased to function as mere exhibition gestures and instead asserted themselves as territories of memory, resistance, and imagination, articulating narratives that expand the horizons of contemporary architectural debate.

Implanted within an agricultural property in Vila Nova de Gaia, characterized by gentle slopes, the Casa do Engenho is part of a built ensemble from the early 18th century, composed of the main residence, cultivated areas, a threshing floor, wells – one of which is the old “mill” – and small support buildings. This complementary body, originally dedicated to hosting family gatherings and celebrations, had a rigid and compartmentalized organization that limited its functionality and daily life.

“Artists bring so much value to the world and don’t ask for much in return except for support in the form of spaces and materials to create and freedom to experiment with their creativity and maybe recognition to crown it all. …Hopefully a little assistance from us all can help grow their talents, add value to themselves and their works, thus allowing them to continue adding value to the world.” Amoako Boafo, Artist and Founder of dot.ateliers

Uncertainty as an Opportunity for Change. The pandemic affected—among other things—the way we relate to and inhabit spaces. The concepts of balance and stability were called into question. As a working hypothesis, we understood that instability would become a new form of balance.Â
