Houses in the United Kingdom were built between 1870 and the outbreak of World War One in 1914. From then on, housing in the UK widely emerged. The key focus was to build organized cities and urban spaces rather than the dynamic look of the building. Most of the buildings are clustered and have a similar kind of nature, because of some significant reasons. The prime reason for being a number of small-scale dwellings is the very cold climate. The weather temperature in the UK was barely raised beyond 20 degrees. So in a clustered form, the internal spaces will remain warm naturally. Another reason the buildings are being scaled small is to accommodate a number of people in a small area, which allows the city to be more organized and a neater settlement.
There are some common characteristics of every house in the United Kingdom. We can see a small front garden that leads to the building entrance, a rear garden with an outhouse or log cabin to allow some household outdoor work, front and rear-oriented ventilation, a ground floor with a reception kitchen-diner, 3 to 4 beds upstairs with two bathrooms, and a loft on the 2nd floor with a pitched roof.
Houses in United Kingdom: The main types are explained
Although all the houses in the United Kingdom are similar in nature, there are some significant types that can be seen all around the UK. You need to know these types if you have an intent to gain Planning Permission Or invest in the UK property market.
Terraced House
When a house shares its left and right walls with the adjacent neighbors, then it is called a terraced house. This house type has front and rear access with natural light and ventilation. An off-road parking space in front of the house or with roadside parking.
This type of house has generally three bedrooms on the first floor, each with one en-suite bath, along with a common bath facility for other bedrooms. The functions like kitchen, diner, reception, etc. are placed on the ground floor.
Semi-Detached House
When a house only shares its left or right wall with its adjacent neighbor, then it is called a semi-detached house. And it’s obvious that it has front and rear access with natural light and ventilation. A off road parking space in front of the house or with roadside parking.
This type of house also has three bedrooms on the first floor, each with one en-suite bath, along with a common bath facility for other bedrooms. But comparatively more specious than the terrace house. The functions like kitchen, diner, reception, etc. are placed on the ground floor.
Detached House
This is the only type that does not share any wall with neighbors except the boundary fence in some cases. This is generally a bigger house than the other two types. Also having the common function of a front and rear access with natural light and ventilation. In most of the cases, a decent-sized garage is attached to the ground floor along with driveway parking. This type of house has generally 4/5 bedrooms on the first floor, with one en-suite bath along with a common bath facility for other bedrooms. The bedrooms are comparatively larger than the other two types of houses. Like the other two types, kitchen, diner, reception, etc. are placed on the ground floor. This house type has a larger back garden than the other two types.
Beside these major types, there are some other types, like barndominium houses, farm houses, ranch houses, palaces, and some old forts and villas.Though these fall under the category of detached houses, they have a certain scale of the property.
After the First World War, UK settlement grew very significantly in an organized way and mostly in the urban sector, which is barely changeable, but houses in the United Kingdom have a lot of opportunity to be modernized architecturally and socially.
